Western Circuit Tanzania

Remote Safari Adventures

Why Visit the Western Circuit?

Exclusive Wilderness: Experience national parks that see fewer visitors in a year than the Northern Circuit sees in a week.

  • Primate Encounters: The home of the best chimpanzee trekking in Africa.

  • Massive Wildlife: Witness the largest concentrations of buffalo and crocodile in Tanzania.

  • Untouched Landscapes: From sandy beaches on Lake Tanganyika to enormous baobab trees.

Best Time to Visit the Western Circuit

  • Dry Season (May – October): This is the prime time for wildlife viewing. In Katavi, animals congregate around the shrinking water sources, offering dramatic predator-prey interactions. It is also the most reliable time for chimpanzee trekking as the chimps stay lower in the valleys.

  • Green Season (November – April): The parks are lush and beautiful. Bird watching is exceptional. However, some camps close in Katavi due to access issues.

Mahale Mountains National Park: The Kingdom of the Chimps

Perhaps the most iconic stop on the Western Circuit Tanzania, Mahale is a place of breathtaking beauty. Towering lush green mountains cascade down to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Here, John Adventures offers you the chance to trek through pristine forest to visit a community of habituated chimpanzees. Following the calls of these majestic apes through the jungle is a profoundly moving experience. Highlight: Swimming in Lake Tanganyika (the longest freshwater lake in the world) after a morning with the chimps. Wildlife: Chimpanzees, Red Colobus monkeys, and the rare Angolan Colobus..

Gombe Stream National Park: Where it all Began

Made famous by Dr. Jane Goodall, Gombe is a small but significant gem. Nestled on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the steep valleys and rapid streams create a haven for primates. Chimpanzee trekking here is intimate and thrilling. Walking in the footsteps of the world’s most famous primatologist, you witness the complex social lives of these great apes in their natural habitat. It’s a pilgrimage for wildlife lovers and a must-do on any Western Circuit itinerary.

Katavi National Park: The Real African Wild

If you want to feel like you have discovered Africa for the first time, go to Katavi. This is the epitome of the off the beaten path safari. It is Tanzania’s third-largest park, yet it receives the fewest visitors. During the dry season, the Katuma River becomes the lifeline of the park, attracting thousands of animals. The Spectacle: Herds of buffalo so large they darken the plains, pods of aggressive hippos fighting for space in shrinking pools, and enormous crocodiles lying in wait. The Landscape: Open miombo woodland and seasonal lakes dotted with giant tamarind trees.
